The Tamil Nadu Idol Wing CID on Wednesday said it has initiated steps to retrieve six Chola-era bronze idols, stolen from the Nareeswara Sivan temple, Veeracholapuram in Kallakurichi district back in the 1960s, and currently kept at various museums in the United States. A letter of request to return the stolen idols was sent “through proper channel” under an agreement between India and the US concerning Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, the wing said. Of them, seven were stolen five decades ago. Based on his complaint, cases under various sections of the IPC and Antiquities and Art Treasures Act of 1972, were registered, a release said.
